Bad Girls Yoga Instructor Breezy Mattox: Curating Moments
She surfs. She parties. She teaches yoga and Pilates. Meet Breezy Mattox, Bad Girls Yoga instructor based in Southern California who’s bringing playful energy, real talk, and serious heart to every session. With a background as an athlete and a personal journey through injury and healing, Breezy found in yoga something she didn't expect: a way back to herself. Now she's sharing that same experience with SoCal yoga students up and down the coast, creating classes that are equal parts movement, community, and joy.
Coming Home to Yourself: Breezy's Yoga Journey
What does yoga mean to you, and how has it impacted your life?
For Breezy, yoga is more than movement: it's a homecoming. "It means space, hope, confidence, joy," she says. "It is a way I come back home to myself. I partner with my body rather than force it." She describes the practice as sharpening all of her senses: feeling more, hearing more, seeing more, breathing more.
That shift didn't happen overnight. Breezy came to yoga carrying a history of injuries and what she calls "a very flowy life," one without much grounding or intention. Yoga changed that. As a surfer and athlete, she found it transformed both her physical performance as well as her entire mindset around what it means to show up in a body, day after day.
Is there a misconception about yoga you'd like to clear up?
Yes, and she'll say it plainly: yoga is not boring, and it's not "too woo woo." Breezy herself used to think so. Now, she says, it's her personal mission to make sure everyone who takes her class walks away having had fun and knowing themselves a little better.
The Teaching Philosophy Behind the Practice
What inspires you to keep teaching?
Breezy relishes helping people reconnect with themselves: giving them space to simply be, to process, and to rediscover a sense of play. "I love empowering people to feel strength again, to breathe again, and see the life that is unfolding right in front of them."
What's your favorite yoga pose, and why?
Tree pose has been Breezy's anchor since middle school, when she first tried it on a Wii Fit balance board and got hooked on the challenge of staying centered. She didn't know then that she'd one day be teaching it. As she puts it, tree pose is like: "Growing roots and having a strong foundation, yet also holding space to move and be blown by the wind."
How would you describe your class style?
Breezy's classes span a range of energies depending on the format. Her faster-paced yoga and Pilates sessions are playful, communal, and high-energy. They’re the kind where you might forget you're working hard because you're too busy laughing. Her more restorative yoga classes take a different approach: they’re reflective, affirming, and rooted in somatic awareness. Whether you're there to sweat or to slow down, Breezy meets you where you are.
First-Timers, This One's for You
What would you say to someone nervous about their first class?
"I was too," Breezy admits. She keeps it simple and honest: nerves are normal, and trying something new takes courage. Her advice is to let yourself be a beginner, because you never know what might be waiting on the other side.
Any top tips for showing up prepared?
Shake off the nerves and remember that it's not a competition, and it's not a destination. It's just a space for you to express yourself and show up with what you've got.
