Bringing Joy to Yoga with Bad Girls Yoga’s Sarah Hartung
At Bad Girls Yoga Charleston, we believe yoga is for every body—and our instructor Sarah Hartung embodies that philosophy perfectly. From bachelorette party participant to certified teacher, Sarah's journey with Bad Girls Yoga shows how yoga can transform not just your practice, but your entire perspective on life. Check out our interview with her to learn about her teaching style.
A Serendipitous Beginning
How did you come across the opportunity to teach with Bad Girls Yoga?
Sarah's path started in the best way possible: "My maid-of-honor booked with BGY for my bachelorette 1.5 years ago and once I became a certified yoga teacher this past spring, I couldn't wait to join the team!"
How did you come across the opportunity to teach with Bad Girls Yoga?
Sarah's response reveals the depth that many people don't realize exists in yoga practice: "Yoga has a 360-degree impact on my life—every aspect, relationship, and part of me is touched by it. While many are familiar with asana, the physical practice, yoga is much deeper and more profound. The Yamas and Niyamas provide a moral compass that guides how I strive to live my life."
This holistic approach is at the heart of what we offer at Bad Girls Yoga. While our classes are absolutely fun and accessible, we honor the rich tradition of yoga that extends far beyond the poses. The Yamas and Niyamas Sarah mentions are yoga's ethical guidelines: principles like non-violence, truthfulness, and contentment that can guide us both on and off the mat.
Breaking Down the Barriers
Is there a common misconception about yoga you'd like to clear up?
One of the biggest hurdles keeping people from trying yoga is intimidation. Sarah addresses this head-on with a refreshing perspective: "There's a perception that yoga is inaccessible, too difficult, or even 'woo-woo.' But yoga is more like an all-you-can-eat buffet. You take what you like, what brings you joy and nourishment, and leave the rest. No two people will have the same plate of food, just as no two people will have the same experience on the mat."
What would you say to someone feeling nervous about trying yoga for the first time?
"You can't do it wrong—it's actually impossible to mess up. It's your body, your movement, your practice. Even if you spend the entire hour lying down or resting in Child's Pose, that's not wrong. If that's what you want and what your body needs, honor it."
This permission to honor your body's needs is revolutionary for many newcomers. At Bad Girls Yoga, we celebrate every form of self-care, whether that means pushing yourself to try a challenging pose or choosing to rest when you need it. Your practice is uniquely yours.
Your top tip for someone preparing for their first class?
"Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in, bring some water, and most importantly—remember to breathe and have fun with it all!"
A Class Style That Delivers
What inspires you to continue teaching yoga to others?
"Joy! So much of life is spent in silos, feeling disconnected. If I can offer someone the opportunity to be present—even for just an hour—and move their body, connect with others, then I'm fulfilling my purpose."
In our increasingly digital world, this kind of present-moment connection is more valuable than ever. Bad Girls Yoga classes aren't just about perfecting poses—they're about creating space for authentic human connection. When you step onto your mat with us, you're joining a community of women who are all on their own unique journeys of self-discovery and growth.
Describe your class style. What would you say to someone feeling nervous about trying yoga for the first time?
Sarah describes her teaching approach as "fun, challenging, rewarding and grounding"—four words that perfectly encapsulate the Bad Girls Yoga experience. Our classes strike a balance between playful energy and meaningful practice. You'll work up a sweat, laugh with your classmates, and leave feeling both energized and centered.
What makes you proud to be a Bad Girls Yoga instructor?
Sarah’s answer highlights something truly special about Bad Girls Yoga: "The community of women who lead and work here is truly inspiring. Some of my own mentors are part of the BGY Charleston team, and I feel so lucky to share my love of yoga, connection, and community with such incredible groups."
This speaks to the heart of what Bad Girls Yoga is all about. We're more than a yoga studio—we're a supportive community where women lift each other up. When instructors feel inspired by their colleagues and students feel supported by their teachers, magic happens on the mat.
Fun Fact
What’s your favorite yoga pose, and what do you love about it?
"Half Pigeon (which is funny because I am deathly afraid of birds)." This comical contradiction captures the playful spirit that Sarah brings to her classes, and reminds us that yoga can be both deeply meaningful and delightfully quirky.
